Katy & Tom’s Wedding: A personal nightmare that turned into a familiar dream.

When I started writing this blog in July I said I would write about the highs and the lows – this was the view I was faced with at the time I should have been photographing Katy & Tom’s wedding ceremony.

People often ask me if I get nervous before I start shooting a wedding. I can honestly say no. It isn’t the thought of my equipment failing or horrendous weather that worries me, as these things can be fixed or plan B can come in to play. What actually keeps me awake at night is being late for a wedding due to a situation that is completely out of my control, despite planning an A and B and C route and leaving an hour before I really need too.

So when I found myself stuck on the M20 as it had come to a complete stand still due to a fatal car crash when I should have been photographing Katy and Tom’s ceremony, it was without doubt my own personal nightmare.

So there I was going nowhere fast, realizing that my nightmare was becoming a reality as I had to make the call to tell Katy & Tom that I wouldn’t be able to photograph them saying their “I Do’s”.

Fortunately for me, Katy & Tom are one of the most relaxed and laid back couples I have had the pleasure of working with. I met them when I photographed Stefanie & Richard’s wedding last year (Tom & Richard are brothers). What I liked most when it came to their wedding, was their “we’ll take it as it comes” attitude. So when they said “it’s not your fault – we’ll meet you at the reception”, in some ways I shouldn’t have been surprised, even if it didn’t stop my heart from sinking with disappointment.

When the traffic finally cleared I was able to make it to the reception at the family farm, just in time for the couple’s arrival. I was so grateful to be surrounded by the familiar faces of Katy & Tom’s friends and family, in a location I’d had the pleasure of shooting before. I stayed longer than planned to try and make up in someway for the time I’d missed and captured Katy & Tom as the sun set on their perfect day.
